Original Writing- Jonas Brothers Free Essays

Although many people don’t realise it, music plays a big part in everyday life. If its auditioning for the X-Factor, going to gigs every week, singing hymns at mass, singing to your favourite tunes in the shower or just listening to the radio on the way to work, we all like our music. It gets us though the days and has a big influence on what we do. We will write a custom essay sample on Original Writing- Jonas Brothers or any similar topic only for you Order Now Music separates the people with the many different genres it offers and some very talented people are behind it all. Considering this I would like to tell you about one of my favourite bands; the Jonas Brothers. Jonas Brothers are a VMA-nominated American boy band. The band consists of three brothers; Kevin, Joe and Nick. They come all the way from Wyckoff, New Jersey and have released three albums; It’s About Time (2006), Jonas Brothers (2007) and recently, A Little Bit Longer (2008), and one soundtrack; Camp Rock (2008). The band gained their popularity on the children’s television network; Disney Channel, which is where the Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock , starring the Jonas Brothers, was first shown. The band star in the movie as a boy band named Connect Three. One of my reasons for liking the Jonas Brothers, is the fact that they are well-known for their wholesome, family image. The brothers are all committed Evangelic Christians, and wear purity rings on their left-hand ring finger as a sign to not have pre-marital sex, of which neither of these things they are ashamed of or afraid of showing. Joe stated that the rings symbolize â€Å"a promise to ourselves and to God that we’ll stay pure ’till marriage† and Nick thinks that â€Å"its pretty awesome, and the rings are just one of our ways of kind of like being different to everybody else out there†. They also abstain form alcohol, tobacco and drugs. Another reason for liking the Jonas Brothers is the fact that in 2007 they earned about $12 million dollars and donated 10% of it to their charity, Change for the Children Foundation. The charity is a foundation started by the Jonas Brothers, where the contributors donate to charities such as, Nothing but Nets, American Diabetes Foundation, St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Summer Stars: Camp for the Performing Arts. Their reasons for stating the charity is to â€Å"support programs that motivate and inspire children to face adversity with confidence, determination and a will to succeed†¦ kids helping other kids who are a little less fortunate.† Paul Kevin Jonas II, also known as Kevin, is the oldest of the brothers aged 21 and born November 5th 1987. He plays lead guitar (usually a Gibson Les Paul) and backing vocals. Kevin is also a songwriter and helped to write the bands self-titled album Jonas Brothers. Joseph Adam Jonas, was born August 15 1989, making him 19. He sings lead vocals, plays percussion and has played the guitar in the song A Little Bit Longer. Joe originally had no intentions of becoming a singer; he wanted to be a comedian and work on the show All That Nicholas Jerry Jonas, is the youngest of the band at only 16 years of age, born September 16 1992. He plays rhythm guitar (usually a Gibson SG in the original re stain colour), lead vocals with brother Joe, piano in the songs When you Look me in the Eyes and A Little Bit Longer, and drums in the songs, Australia, Can’t Have You, Sorry and Video Girl. He can play various other instruments also. On November 16 2005 (aged 13), he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Franklin Nathaniel Jonas, is the baby of all the brothers, of only 8 years of age and was born September 28 2000, and isn’t in the Jonas Brothers, but being the bands younger brother he still plays a big part in their lives. He is also known as the Bonus Jonas and Frank the Tank. He will debut with his brothers on J.O.N.A.S!(a Disney Channel Original Series (2009)), and may have a small appearance in Camp Rock 2. Other members of the band are: John Taylor who helps produce for the band, as well as plays guitar. Greg Garbowsky has been with the brothers since they started out. He plays bass guitar and keeps a blog of Life on the Road with the Boys. Jack â€Å"Flawless Lawless† Lawless joined the band in early 2007, and has replaced former drummer Alex Noyes. Ryan Liestman plays the keyboards for the group. The single, A Little Bit Longer, released earlier this year, was written by Nick Jonas himself and is about his fighting battle to carry on pursuing his dreams with his diabetes. He sings alone in this song, about how â€Å"you don’t know what it feels like until its gone†. This song is very emotional and on occasions, Nick has been seen to be crying on stage to this particular song. He’s said â€Å"Luckily, I’ve got some really great people around me that really help me manage my diabetes. And it hasn’t slowed me down yet, and I’m not planning on letting it do that. So I’m going to continue to do what I love and if I have occasional low or high blood sugar, it will be all right because I’ve got some really great people surrounding me.† With the Jonas Brothers being so talented and successful at such a young age, I find them so inspiring to listen to and am proud to be a fan of theirs. You could be in any situation, but you’re holding on because you don’t want to give up on love. Say you’re in a terrible situation†¦you can always find the light if you look hard enough. Utilitarian and Deontological Theory Drug Testing Essay Example For Students

Utilitarian and Deontological Theory Drug Testing Essay Ramona D. Jones Utilitarian and Deontological Theory Drug Testing ETH 501 TUI University Abstract Drug testing is becoming a standard practice is the workplace. Companies are finding that by conducting random drug testing of their employees it amounts to huge long term savings for the company. There are several benefits for companies that conduct drug testing. Companies have a legal obligation to ensure a safe work environment to all employees, and implementation of drug testing assures this. The utilitarian would argue companies’ have an ethical and moral obligation to protect the rights of the larger populous by enforcing drug testing. Deontologists are wedged in the middle on this issue. Companies that engage in drug testing must outline the requirements of drug testing to their employees. Utilitarian and Deontological Theory The federal government and many companies have adopted policies regarding the use of drugs, as well as instituting a variety of drug screening, control, and rehabilitation programs (Ethical aspects of, 2006). Drug testing is becoming a standard practice in the workplace. Companies are finding that by conducting random drug testing of their employees it amounts to huge long term savings for the company. There are several benefits for companies that conduct drug testing. Substance abuse can be a significant problem in the workplace, contributing to impaired productivity and job performance, increased accidents and injuries, violations of security, theft of company property, and diminished employee morale (Ethical aspects of, 2006).. There are many that would argue their right to physical privacy is being violated by being subjected to these test, and for some that feel strongly they’re willing to be fired to stand their ground. I offer to these individuals to try riding shotgun in a car with someone high on cocaine as I once was forced to, and ask would they want this type of individual setting in the cubicle next to them. The reality is that America has a blase demeanor about drugs. Dappling at sampling drugs is unfortunately becoming standard in American society. With this type of culture it’s understandable that companies are being forced to conduct drug testing. The utilitarian would argue companies’ have an ethical and moral obligation to protect the rights of the larger populous by enforcing drug testing. Companies have a legal obligation to ensure a safe work environment to all employees, and implementation of drug testing assures this. The potential of incurring the negatives consequences of absenteeism, theft, and potential violence in the workplace assures drug testing will remain a cost effective tool for companies. Companies that engage in drug testing must outline the requirements of drug testing. The utilitarian would offer to those employees that feel that their physical privacy is being violated that they have the option to apply to workplaces where drug testing isn’t mandated. The greater good is to protect the safety of the majority of employees. Deontologists are wedge in the middle on this issue. One they would argue one shouldn’t be concerned of any violent consequences that would ensue from the recreational use of drugs. On the flipside of the coin would be the obligations one has to live up to their responsibility of the law, and the obligations of employee agreement would violate deontological principles. To partake in drugs would be a clear violation of these legal obligations. While drug testing may appear to be in violation of physical privacy one should have the right to do as they desire in the privacy of their own domicile. Taking on employment places ones action into question if they’re actions can lead to the harm of unsuspecting bystanders like those customers and co-workers. Deontologist may want to argue the point of privacy and advocate that it’s immoral and unethical to do drug testing, but would they ride on a plain with someone high on cocaine? Charlotte Perkins Gilman Essays - Beecher Family,

Charlotte Perkins Gilman Good 1 Charlotte Perkins Gilman experienced astonishing success during her life. When she died in 1935, she left behind a legacy of ingenious writing. ?Charlotte Perkins Gilman was one of the leading intellectuals of the American women's movement in the first two decades of the 20th century? (Gilman, The Living of Charlotte Perkins Gilman). Her literary works explore the minds of remarkable and courageous women. Charlotte Perkins Gilman left an impression on society not only through her brilliant writings and social reforms, but also in her own perseverance in overcoming personal hardships. Charlotte was born into the prominent Beecher family (Gilman 3). In fact, the illustrious Harriet Beecher Stowe was a great-aunt (3). Charlotte grew up with pride in her family. She recalls ?When about fifteen years old I was told of our extremely remote connection with English royalty and I wrote eagerly to my learned father to inquire as to the facts- was I related to Queen Victoria (1). However, her father solemnly replied, ?It is quite true that you are related to Queen Victoria, but there are a great many persons between you and the throne and I should not advise you to look forward to it? (1). Despite her legendary family ties, Charlotte's childhood was filled with pain, uncertainty, and rejection. Her father abandoned his family shortly after her birth (Lane 3). While a young woman, she suffered through a bad marriage that caused her to endure a nervous breakdown (3). It was during this time that Charlotte encountered her first bout with depression; there were many battles to follow (3). Thus, within the formative years of her young life, Charlotte suffered immeasurable pain and agony at the hands of males. This may possible be a motive behind her works based around strong female characters. Throughout her early life, it was apparent that Charlotte was an extremely strong-willed girl. ?At the age of sixteen or seventeen she perceived herself as having ?no character to be especially proud of: impressionable, vacillating, sensitive, uncontrolled, often loafing and lazy? (Lane 57). However, she was determined to change herself into a disciplined, controlled person. Charlotte, an extremely intelligent child, was not able to consistently attend school until the age of thirteen. Living in poverty for most of her life, Charlotte was only able to attend school after the death of a great-aunt who left her an inheritance. Although her teachers were impressed with her aptitude, they soon became frustrated with her resistance to routines that restricted her imagination (59). Charlotte longed to be different. She was driven to defy conditional notions of what young girls ?should be.? Dr. Studley, a teacher who instructed Charlotte in hygiene, became particularly influential (59). Cha rlotte instantly converted to ?a regime of cold baths, exercise, fresh air, and dress reform (59). She became caught up in the physical culture movement of the late nineteenth century. ?In a culture that valued frailty in women, Charlotte took delight and pleasure in her robust health and her strong body? (59). Much of Charlotte's late adolescence was spent nursing her ill mother. She describes her mother as being the ?disciplinarian? and this caused problems between the two of them (Gilman 12). Charlotte complained that her mother was so ?rigorous in refusing all manner of invitations for me? I was denied so often (Lane 60-61). Her mother's denials protected her from entering the adult world of men, relationships, and love. Charlotte soon, however, entered this world when she was married to Charles Walter Stetson (Gilman 82). In her autobiography, she discusses her mixed emotions regarding Mr. Stetson and marriage. She says, ?my mind was not fully clear as to whether I should marry. On the one hand I knew it was normal and right in general, and held that a woman should be able to have marriage and motherhood and do her work in the world? (83). However, there were more cynical times when Charlotte expresses ?I felt strongly that for me it was not right, that the nature of the life before me forbade it, that I ought to forego the more intimate personal happiness for complete devotion to my work? (83). Despite her doubts, the two were married in May of 1884.

Free Essays on The Devastation Of Schizophrenia

The Devastation of Schizophrenia Schizophrenia is a severe and devastating brain disorder that distorts the way a person thinks, acts, expresses emotions, perceives reality and relates to others. Of all mental illnesses, schizophrenia undoubtedly results in the greatest amount of personal, emotional and social costs. It presents an enormous threat to life and happiness. It also causes more lengthy hospitalizations, more chaos in family life, more exorbitant costs to individuals and government and more fears than any other. Contrary to popular belief, schizophrenia is not a split personality. It actually means a split between the individual's perception of reality and reality, not a Dr. Jekyll - Mr. Hyde switch in character (Grayson, 1). Approximately 1 percent of the population develops schizophrenia during their lifetime - more than 2 million Americans suffer from the illness in a given year. Although schizophrenia affects men and women with equal frequency, the disorder often appears earlier in men, usually in the late teens or early twenties, than in women, who are generally affected in the twenties to early thirties. Scientists still do not know the specific cause of schizophrenia and believe that it is a combination of many factors that may precipitate the disorder. It is known, however, that schizophrenia- like cancer and diabetes- is a real illness with a biological basis. It is not the result of bad parenting or personal weakness. No credible authority believes any longer that social circumstance, poverty, poor mothering or willful behavior cause schizophrenia. Researchers have uncovered a number of factors that appear to play a role in the development of schizophrenia (Grayson, 3). Schizophrenia does "run in the family". The disorder has an important genetic component. Evidence for a genetic element comes from twin studies. Monozygotic twins (identical twins) are those with exactly the same genetic make...
